To me, there were two main benefits. First, the extra release button
and control wheels for shooting on the high end. Secondly, Pentax
cameras are a bit too small to fit the hands nicely. The grip amends
that very well.

I know you have (had?) the Z-1p... FYI, I found the Z-1 with the
"dummy" grip to be perfect size for my hands.
