Your friend is misinformed.
For some time now (2 years?), Irfanview has offered lossless rotation which it DOES save. You need the plugins to do it.
A very useful feature.

Hi all,
Sorry for what was probably quite misinformation in some form. I was
thinking in terms of digital compacts which have an orientation sensor that
automatically tags it into the EXIF information. I'm not sure whether the
ist D has the same feature, so the information may or may not be relevant.
Also, a friend of mine just reported that apparently while Irfanview reads
and rotates, it's just for viewing (useful in slideshows I guess); it
doesn't save the transformation.. Bummer..
However, for unbloated utlities which do the same thing, jhead does the job
(Anders- you're still it!)
Cheers, Ryan

7)Sorry Henk, can't test your findings yet.
On another note, Irfanview now does lossless rotation based on EXIF tags-
woohoo! (Anders and Jostein, thanks for jpegtran and jhead and Thumbsplus
