That's all you can do but shooting RAW helps a little however I don't know what the histogram is actually reporting when shooting RAW. I don't know if it takes into account the in camera contrast setting or if it shows the full histogram of the RAW capture? I guess I'll have to do a little experiment next time I have my camera out.
