Jeremy,
I have some of the same concerns that you have. For the time being, Pentax is offering one DSLR model which I consider seriously overpriced. Here in Toronto, the *istD is $2200 (that includes the 18-35mm FAJ lens, but most people say it's not worth much). The Canon 20D body can be pre-ordered for $2000.
Like you, I already have some Pentax lenses (I had a lot more, but I have gradually been selling them off). However, if I went to a DSLR I would need to buy at least a couple more zooms (e.g., 12-24mm, 18-125mm). I don't want to make that additional commitment unless I think I'm going to be happy with Pentax for the long term.
For the time being, you could get a Digital Rebel and replace your present Pentax lenses with Canon equivalents and still have plenty of cash left over compared to a *istD. It's not made of metal, but most people don't drive nails with their camera, and picture quality is at least as good.
I'm hanging on until the end of the year to see what new DSLRs Pentax comes out with, but I don't have high hopes. Digital is an electronics game, and Pentax is not strong in electronics.
