The controversy on stirred up by Shel's commentary is unsettling to me.
I've met Shel in person and don't think there is a nasty bone in his body.
He is a fine fellow with a wonderful way with people. Still, when I read his
original commentary I shuddered. It was a full blown critique.
When I finally got to see the picture and think of Shel's work, I knew John's
photo would be stronger with the faces of the people. Shel's latest post
confirms this.
Here is what's unsettling to me. If you want a heavyweight critique of your
photos, why not go to photo forum or wherever and submit some work. I don't
think this is what the PUG is about. We have photos in the PUG that are
postcards, that are birth announcements, that are 'here's what's going on in
my life now', and that are more serious photos. We can't critique all these
photos as heavyweights.
Furthermore, I'm facing the daunting task of trying to view the PUG over my
phone lines and correlate the 31 emails of critique with the pictures. Wow,
I used to enjoy viewing the PUG and seeing what people are doing. Now it's
like a homework assignment. I'm lucky to finish it before the next PUG
arrives!
I would rather see the PUG as a place to get words of encouragement from
fellow photographers. I would rather view it for inspiration on good photo
ideas and techniques. I would hope to continue to see it as a kind of photo
bulletin board for our list. And if possible, I'd like to see less critique
and more encouragement on the public face of our list.
Regards, Bob S.
