This is already well-established, a given in the print media.
Author or reporter, a writer simply cannot successfully edit
his or her own copy. The craft of the editor (newspapers in my
wife's experience, nonfiction books in mine) is to polish
the work to a fine sheen without coloring it with one's own
voice. Especially in dealing with authors, an editor also must
strike a good balance between firmness and tact.

But it cuts another way as well. Sometimes it takes another
pair of eyes to find merit where the writer sees none.

Regards,

Stephen Moore
