I've got a thick skin. You develop one in academics
or you get out. (Q: Why are academic politics so
vicious? A: Because the stakes are so low.)

Even so, Shel's response was not what I expected. His
is one of the voices that I had come to respect, for
his civility as much as anything else. So I was
surprised when I read his post--surprised rather than
hurt.

First, his comments in the first paragraph seemed to
be aimed at the photographer, not the photograph.
Second, his choice of words was gratuitously harsh,
designed, it felt as I read them, to wound, not to
instruct.

As for the photo itself, it will stand or fall on its
own merits. I needn't say anything about it.

I do, on the other hand, need to thank the list for
the constructive critiques of the image. Several have
been very helpful, including those from people who
didn't like it. <

You, sir, are to be commended for a classy post and I for one appreciate it.
Maybe my old college professor was right after all, when he said that
dignity and class are prerequisite attributes for inductions into the halls
of academia. I look forward to your future submissions in the PUG.
Notwithstanding....

Sincerely,

Paulo Ernest
