Civil jets have to comply with noise restrictions, while military aircraft don't. I used to live in the flightpath of Dorval Airport in Montreal, a couple of miles away. The jets back then (60's) were very loud compared to today's fanjet powered airliners. Nowadays, especially when landing, they are amazingly quiet.
