Two hours?! It's only supposed to light up while you're holding down the
battery check button!

Sounds like the battery check button is sticking!
Given the high current draw of 1970's-era LEDs and the limited capacity
of the two little batteries in the camera, a couple of hours of
illumination could make a big hit in battery life.
