Actually you would be the one committing assault. If I hit you I'd be committing battery. On the other hand
I might be able to claim self defense if there were enough witnesses to your diatribe.

or a journalist writing down a description of it in his notebook? Why are photographers singled out for this sort of treatment?

For the same reason that Pit Bull Terriers are singled out for extinction.
A number of them have been at the centre of some fairly distasteful activities, and now the lot of us is paying for it.

Regarding photography on nude beaches, a person cannot have any expectation to privacy in public, but this doesn't mean they want to (or should have to) tolerate images of themselves being taken.

As I wrote to another list member last night:

If you are walking down the street, and I am
maintaining distance of 6 inches from your nose, I can spend my
entire day screaming obscenities at you, should I so desire.
Doesn't matter a whit whether you feel impinged upon, you're in a
public place, and have no right to expect to be treated with any sort
of dignity.
And if you touch me, I'll sue your sorry ass for assault.

I can understand why mankind hasn't given up war. During a war you get to drive tanks through the sides of buildings and shoot foreigners - two things that are usually frowned on during peacetime.
