I just startet a conversion and browsed, absolutely no problems, same speed as ever. I didn't fiddle around with priorities or stuff, I just startet the conversion and went on browsing.

You are using 2k then? Maybe there are more differences from 2k to Xp then after all?

Or don't you have enough memory for PLab to work without swapping, that would explain the crawling?

how does browsing the web work? that's pretty trivial and it slows to a
crawl. Windows XP Pro has nothing that 2000 doesn't have except supporting
dual Hyperthreading processors. 2000 Pro supports only one with
Hyperthreading enabled.

Huh? I had no problems at while the pentax lab converted pictures, and I
got no dual system, just a P4 2.4Ghz, and not even one of these new P4
hyperthreading thingies.

And with XP you don't need to yield control active anymore. You can
*really* hog the cpu with a few things you shouldn't do, of course.
