It depends which bag and for what purpose:
For a day out covering a protest or other civil actions, just an old canvas
army bag that I can sling over my shoulder, lenses in leather pouches,
camera with strap and a bucket load of film. I can quick not look like a
photographer if necessary.
For a day out wandering (in the city or bush) I have a large bag of ballistic
nylon that I can wear off a shoulder and which allows me to flip the top and
exchange gear easily whilst walking. It always contains and small tripod,
2xAAA Maglite, lens cleaning cloths, a small towel (for drying off the gear,
not me), spare 3v lithium batteries, cable release, all the appropriate hoods
for the lenses selected (caps off and in the front pocket, hoods fitted),
camera straps fitted and I put in it what ever else that I imagine that I might
need for the day (like films, pen & note pad or micro-recorder, cell phone and
a spot meter if I am shooting slide film). This bag will comfortably fit three
bodies and five lenses along with all the other stuff.
For a trip away I often take my waterproof UK case (with pluck-foam interior),
large ballistic nylon bag and an assortment of small cases. The UK case is
laid out to contain a limited LX system but also contains a solitaire Maglite,
spare batteries, folding finder for the LX, Lenspen, Lens cloths, cable
release, hoods, two circular polarizers, up to six rolls of film and sometimes
a Manfrotto table top tripod.
I don't often feel in need of anything else, my equipment requirements and
kits have evolved over time, I am not really interested in an all contingency
kit, mine work fine for me.
