Maybe it's the aspherical element - IIRC the mass-produced aspherics were molded plastic on top of glass element (because all-glass aspherics are so damn expensive, think Leica ASPH). So perhaps it's the bond between the two that's deteriorating optically, while if so, they would have certainly used some very special method of bonding them together... or not?
