Actually I think it's an infra-red effect, not true infra-red. I think to get true infra-red in digital you need a cooled sensor.
Nah, you can get true infra-red from a room-temperature sensor - it's only if you want "far" infra-red (eg thermal cameras) that you need to cool the sensor. All digital cameras pick up a certain amount of IR, unless the designers stick a filter in front of the sensor to remove it.
