I think people are more likely to quote a number simply because the number is right there to see. With film, it wasn't being prominently displayed in front of our faces all the time. I also think some folks are expressing surprise at how their shooting habits have changed.
Different habits will develop with digital and film. It's like that "chimping" thread. Folks will look just because they can. You never even thought to look with film since you couldn't. If you're shooting a still subject or anything where you could try again then it makes perfect sense to check. I think the reaction to chimping has a lot to do with what you tend to shoot. If you like candids of people then you either got it or you didn't; if you're having them pose, then you can check if the eyes are all open. The funny part about that movie in the other thread about chimping was that they were all sports photographers and looking was just "Phew, I got it".
