the reason for my inquiry is how to trigger them
with a standard mechanical release cable like the dual
one used on the autobellows units. I think
I could make one though so I'll cross that bridge
when I get to it.

The istD uses a multipin cable attached to a small controller. The 
whole thing is electrical, there is no mechanical (moving parts) 
linkage to the camera.
I expect that if you could find a small connector that would fit the 
camera, it would be possible to make your own, though I would be 
using micro switches in the controller.
The real thing is magnificently overpriced, I paid something like 
$Can50.00 for an istD release. I don't have the time or interest to 
manufacture one, hence the spending of money.
