Filing the photos by date doesn't seem to be a good idea for me, although having the date available as a search option seems good. I like (and seem to work best with) using descriptions like "Market Street with Marnie" or "San Francisco MOMA with Juan" to tell me what's in the folder. Adding a date after that will be helpful, as well as some description of what the photos may be about. So, being able to access something like this would be ideal:
