Is it possible they could occur when the surface temperature is more,
um, temperate, but the temps aloft, at the right altitude, are brutal? 
I ask because back around Thanksgiving or Christmas I saw what I would
have sworn were sundogs, but the surface temperature was -8C or -10C,
not -20C.
