as i have said in another post, i have seen pairs in summer. getting 4 is 
where conditions really have to be right.

Is it possible they could occur when the surface temperature is more,
um, temperate, but the temps aloft, at the right altitude, are brutal?
I ask because back around Thanksgiving or Christmas I saw what I would
have sworn were sundogs, but the surface temperature was -8C or -10C,
not -20C.
