The Nikons have one as well. It can be read from a RAW file's EXIF
info, maybe even from JPG's EXIF info, it's one of the hidden
manufacturer parameters there. It shows total exposure count, and
apparently can't be user reset easily (the "reset" pin button on the botton
of the camera might reset even this, though).

Without looking this up, it might be a lottery - you could get a
camera used by a pro in a studio which is already beyond 50 000
exposures, but looks pristine... and it almost certainly will fail
shortly. Just based on reports from others who had DSLRs from the
start here, used them daily to make a living, and used the "cheaper"
ones like D100 and S1 and D30 because hardly anybody beyond an agency
or big studio could have afforded a better camera back then...
