It's like so many things: the process becomes part of the fun. You don't need an expensive coffee roaster; a frying pan and an oven are all that's needed. Nothing to time, just listen for the beans cracking. After the second round of cracking, they're done. Easy-peasy! We get our green beans from some local place that claims they sell fair-trade environmentally friendly beans - not a great huge issue with me, but if they're on the up and up, all the better. Another source is in the Ethiopian enclave of Toronto - there may be such a place near where you live. Costs about the same or less than whole beans at the grocery store - like $8 a pound or something like that. If you need any pointers, lemme know! Hope you try it: it's fun, and the taste is worth it. cheers, frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson
