Bill is correct. Also the no load voltage is much higher than the full load voltage. When your EVM is showing 1.4V the cell is probably down to 1.0V at full load. Alkalines are funny that way. NiCad and NiMh hold their voltage under load until almost fully discharge then die suddenly.

The camera isn't as voltage sensitive as it is current sensitive.
NiMh batteries put out something like 3 times the amperage of alkalines.
