You can always just select a volume and use the Finder's
File->Eject volume menu command (or Command-E) if dragging to
the trash is uncomfortable to you. Or, in Panther, just click on
the Eject symbol next to the volume in a Finder window Sidebar. 

I find it a lot easier to understand than figuring out where you
properly unmount a volume on a Windows XP system.

The Finder's user interface is purely development evolution ...
you can't change that stuff too fast or people get lost. The
underlying OS infrastructure in Mac OS X are a revolution over
anything in Mac OS 9 or before, as is the graphics system which
is state of the art.
