I agree with you if you talk about *photo files* backup.
But most documents inklusing email I see on *private* computers would
happily fit on a CD/CDRW or DVD.
Even better is a (used) DAT tape and an automatic daily backup job on
different tapes overnight or at least on a external HD into different
folders named like the days of week for ex....

no excuses for missing backups please ;-)
