I think it's obvious that the color didn't quite work here - different
light, different film, a different lens may have made it work better, or,
of course, it could have been adjusted in PS.

The plug-in from The Imaging Factory has some very nice features, however,
I wouldn't want to have that as the only source for B&W conversion.  There
are so many other options, but, AFAIC, it's a definite keeper and well
worth the download and free trial.  Buying it is spendy, and it may not be
worth the money to some, although I think I'm going to pop for it when the
free trial expires.
