RAW conversion is very processor intensive. A 350Mhz computer is never going to be fast doing it. Also, Pentax Lab is inefficient.

You can build good, fast workflows and batch conversion with both Photoshop and Capture One, amongst others. You do need a more modern computer, however, to get the most out of them.

Current high end LCD displays have more gamut than all but the highest end CRTs. Sony, LG, Phillips, and others all have very high quality LCD displays. I believe Apple uses Phillips display hardware in the Apple Cinema Display 20", which is the same screen used in the iMac 20" systems. It is fantastic. The Cinema Display 20" is fully compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows systems.

Converting the 22 RAW files to best JPG with the Laboratory
last night was a real time-eater -- on a 350MHz system.

And when I did the best TIFF format, Micrografx Picture Publisher (I forgot which version) wouldn't load them properly.
So it was redone to JPG. 2x the fun.

So next is a faster computer. $500
Photoshop CS $whatever

And I think a tube will remain for viewing images.
My good LCD @ work has noticably less color depth
than the tube @ home. Or is there a recommended
LCD that has a good color depth?
