Wheel on the front (actually the top by the shutter release) is aperture.
There is no wheel on the back (as in Pentax) - it is a much larger wheel
near the LCD (where the four-way switch is on the *ist D). That large
wheel is (amongst other things) shutter speed. They can be programmed any
way round on the 1D, don't know about others.
