I never said I wouldn't pay more for features that were valuable to me, I certainly would. But I would just not pay a signifigant amount more for a camera with ONLY better build quality at this point. i.e. If Pentax and Canon had similar models with similar features and performance there is no way I would pay $500 more for either one just for better build quality. That's just my personal choice on the matter. I'd rather spend the 500 on a better model without top build quality than a worse model with top build quality because I know I wont be keeping the camera for much more than 5 years.... JCO

The problem you get into here is that the cameras (like the *ist D, 20D, 10D and D100) that offer the features that a more advanced photogrpaher wants (better metering and focusing choices; more overall control, ie not relying on "picture modes" to decide what focusing points, metering modes etc are used; accessories such as a battery grip with vertical release). With that feature set also comes higher build quality. The above listed cameras are far better built (can take some abuse by careless, thoughtless, active photographers such as sports, journalists, nature types including myself) than their entry level counterparts (*ist Ds, D70, digirebel and rebelXT). So if you do demand the better feature set, like I do, you get the better built bodies along with it. Obviously, if given the same features in two bodies - one built like a tank costing $500+ more than the other cheap and plasticy one- I'd go for the cheaper one. If you are happy with the loss of control offered by the lower cost bodies mentioned above it's a no brainer. You can't "choose" low build quality with full feature/control right now. Point taken that DSLRs are "disposable" And no I don't expect to be using my current DSLR in 30 to 40 years. I expect to be using whatever is mostly current at that time. Christian
