It's often said that the *ist D is kinda slow and has a too small buffer.
So, I ran a little test:

I took 6 shots of my kitchen clock.
I held the shutter down and took 5 RAW file shots in a row. I kept pressing
the shutter - after the 5 frame burst - to see how long it would take the
camera to get ready for frame number six.

Your camera seems faster than my camera by about 4 seconds.
I wonder if they didn't make an undocumented improvement to the camera. Mine is pretty early in the model run, I understand yours is a little later.
