Hello William
So, you ran similar tests :-)
I got mine from Berlin in August 2004.
So, it might be a late model.
I like it very much, but judging from the red light at the back, it takes
appr. half a minute to write a 5-shot-burst of RAW-files on to a Ultra II
card. It will take the camera 10 sec's to write just one RAW-shot!
This seemed too long to me - thus the test. I was actually surprised when I found out, that the camera could shoot more frames after just 9-10 seconds.
In fact its only 6 seconds after finishing the first five. That all i must
wait - 6 seconds.
When shooting sports, people etc. 6 seconds seem like an eternity!

What is happening is that it is writing the first frame to the card while the rest are being shot.
Hence the sixth shot being a bit faster to shoot.
After that, the thing slows WAY down.
I find it's about 12 seconds per shot after the buffer is well and truly full (5 shot burst + the sixth shot) I don't shoot sports, but even in a portrait environment, I find it to be a very long wait.
