I've used the standard Sigma 1.4x with my 80-200/2.8 for several
years now, both on film and on the *ist-D.  I'm breaking so many
rules there (TCs on a zoom - shocking!), but it works well.

Another surprisingly good performer is the Pentax 1.7x AF adapter.
Here's a shot from this weekend (AF adapter + A300/2.8):
