I suspect that the commercial failure of the ME-F with its autofocus
lens is what set Pentax back in the autofocus race. After the ME-F
they went back to manual focus systems in the P series and were not
ready to meet the challenge of the Minolta 7000.

Replacing the mirror baffles isn't too difficult - just proceed
carefully in removing the old "goo". I find it's best to hold the
camera body at an angle so that any dislodged pieces of the old foam
fall away from the focussing screen but generally the old foam will
stick to the scalpel (or whatever) that you use to remove it. Clean
up the residue of the foam with methylated spirits on a cotton bud.

Cheers
