The D/DS operate the same way with regard to manual focus lenses when
the AF switch is set ON. It allows a feature called "trap focus" ...
prefocus on a spot, hold the shutter down, and when the subject
crosses the spot to light up the focus indicator, the shutter fires.
Regards 'limitations', AF is just another feature you can take
advantage of when it is useful. Every automation feature has its
limitations. It turns out to be no-brainer useful about three-
quarters of the time or so, for me anyway. The rest of the time I
need to think, just like I do with a manual focus lens.
