i disagree. i think that before digital, there was a lot more qualitative knowledge required that couldn't be so easily written down. film choice determined lots of things, as did developing and printing, that you could show and demonstrate, but not in a way that was so easily controllable. there were too many variables for most people to control. some of those controls can now be placed into the camera.

My K1000 has three "control wheels", a lever and a button.
My istD has a plethora of buttons, a couple of control wheels, an LCD that allows me to access menus, sub menus and I am sure subsets of the submenus.
