I know about the old Lumixes, and the brick-feeling Leica digitals and
all that. My subject line, "the next leica" referred to the way the
camera is used, not to the brand name.

But I'll take a look at that thread. Thanks!

Juan,

A lot of Leica M photogs are, and have used, the Panasonic Lumix. There
results, at least on the web and with the few printed pics I've seen, are
quite good. You may go here:

guest. Right now there's a thread going on about the DMC-LX1

Leica and Panasonic have partnered on digi cameras for quite some time,
with Panasonic providing the bodies and electronics and Leica providing -
what else? - the glass.

Hah!

I have an essentially brand new black RF Leica C1 that I just don't like the way Panasonic thinks a camera body should work.
It's no Leica! It may be a Panasonic, I don't know...
Images are great, I don't like the body.
It's a personal thing...
38-105mm Leica Vario-Elmar f/4-10.5 zoom lens.

I've only put one roll of film thru it.

Make you a good price!

I was thinking that I'd like to try one of the new high resolution P&S
cameras for street shooting. There are now 6Mp and 8Mp compact point
and shoots, and it is tempting to get one to play with in the
street...

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 even has a RAW mode, and at 3:2 the images
are higher res than the ones from the istD:
