A few years ago I decided to refinish a table. I set it up in the back
yard, and spent most of the weekend hand sanding the top, enjoying the
sunshine, the tactile sensation of sanding, and the pleasure of
accomplishment. During that weekend a friend came by, saw what I was
doing, and brought over his power sander, suggesting that I could finish
the job in 15 minutes. He just didn't get it!

I just finished sanding the drywall in my bathroom.
If someone ever comes up with a power sander for that job, I'm all for it.

I'm a big fan of power sanders for the initial rough sanding (no tactile pleasure in removing old paint or varnish), but about the same time I am getting into the 100 grit or higher papers, I like to go back to hand sanding for exactly the same reason you mentioned.
