Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the narrative. I do wish there were a better photo for you. The whole experience went from nerve wracking to exhilarating to just plain fun.
One thing I observed about the bear was that he (or she) didn't like the sound my camera makes. The *ist emitts a "whirt" when the aperture stops down, a not too loud mirror/shutter sound, another "whirt" to open the aperture and finally a fairly annoying high-pitched film advance. The whole sequence is not very loud, but every time I clicked the shutter he would turn and move away a few yards. Then I had to wait a while before trying to get another photo.
