Behind the camera. :) Still, complex and less-than-ideal, which is why I recommended ambient light mostly and perhaps a little flash for fill. I've seen all kinds of problems with flash for interior photography. See http://www.randoriginal.com He used on-camera flash (with no bounce or diffuser) for most of the shots. A wide angle lens (probably zoom) with plenty of barrel distortion. Almost never kept the camera level.
