The Leica M is
pretty much the same size relative to a Domke F5XB that a Nikon FM/
FE3 is, but the lenses are a little smaller for their focal length.
Sometimes: compare the Pentax M85/2.0 with the Leica 90mm
Summicron, or
even the 90mm Elmarit. Compare the Pentax K50/1.4 or M50/1.4
with the
Leica 50mm Summilux. Or the Noctilux with the Pentax K or A
50/1.2. Or
the Leica 75mm/1.4 with the Pentax 77mm Ltd. The M3/M2 weighs
within a few
grams of some of the Pentax K bodies which, even on this list, are
considered a big and heavy camera.
I'm not sure whether you're agreeing with me or not. :-)
I looked at lenses..
Pentax M85/2 smaller than Elmarit-M 90/2.8.
Pentax A50/1.4 and F50/1.7 are smaller than Summicron-M 50/2.
Pentax FA35/2 about the same length but larger diameter than the
Summicron-M 35/2 ASPH.
Pentax A24/2.8 smaller than Elmarit-M 24/2.8 ASPH.
Some body dimension data:
M6TTL: 138 x 79.5 x 38 ::580g
FM2n: 142.5 x 90 x 58 ::540g
MX: 135.8 x 82.5 x 49.3 ::495
K1000: 143 x 91.5 x 49 ::620
*ist DS: 125 x 93 x 66 ::605 g (inc batteries)
The SLRs are a bit thicker than the M, but are quite close in size/
weight overall. I'm not sure which batteries the DS was measured
with, NiMH are about twice the weight of Lithiums.
I love the Leica for many reasons. It's weight and large size are
just a
couple of them ;-))
Sure, I can understand that. It's a personal preference. I enjoyed my
Leica Ms a lot. But I'm more of an SLR guy.
