I agree. It is a choice and the one making the choice needs to live with it.

And of course there are times when I will gladly purchase insurance (life,
house, car, etc.) The issue is the absurdly ad hominem comment by Seth that
someone who behaves in a way that he does not agree with must be an idiot.

I say again, if you have faith that others are not looking to rip you off,
and if you have faith in a highly effective postal system, then a way of
reducing the hassle of sending/receiving stuff is to avoid the insurance.

And my comment about Mexico? My Dad lived there for many years (until his
death a few years ago), and roughly 50% of the mail and packages I sent him
never arrived. When my step-mother or step-sister sends anything from Mexico
(letter, Christmas card, whatever), they contract with a courier service
that takes the item 500 miles to California to mail it from there. So, in my
experience, Mexico is not a good risk and I would not send anything of any
value, insured or not. My experience with Argentina is longer ago, but I
cannot recall anything I sent there being lost. So, unless something has
changed recently, I would consider shipping an item there to be acceptable
risk.
