Are the rechargeable CR-V3 batteries lithium? Are they as long lasting (or nearly so) as the non-rechargeable type? I noticed that they're specifically not recommended in the manual for the *ist-DS. Has anyone out there tried them, and to what level of success?

I'd say they last longer than NiMh, but not as long as the non- rechargeable CR-V3 batteries.

What I like about my (Delkin) rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries is twofold: The autofocus is noticeably faster with the slightly higher voltage, and the ability for the camera to do a rapid sequence of photos without exhausting the batteries is delightful. I could never do an 8-photo rapid sequence before without getting a low-battery warning and having to power-cycle the DS before continuing. Now I can just hold the button down (where appropriate - I don't do it a lot) and the camera just keeps going.

That being said, the rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries have some downsides apart from the non-recommendation from Pentax:

 1. When they die, it's sudden. No real warning.
2. Recharge time is about 90 minutes per battery, and there are two of them.

At least the charger is a universal-voltage charger. Overall I think it's a good deal, but others have been skeptical. "Works for me!"
