I suspected that it might be a bad adapter also, so I tried
it with an LX - worked fine on that.  

I also tried a manual flash (vivitar 2850, not 285) and that
worked on the *ist DS.  

I would be very disappointed if I cannot get this to work -
one of the main reasons I bought it was to use this Novatron
kit in my makeshift portrait studio (for all the advantages
of instant feedback that it can give. 

I hope someone has tried something like this before!  I
cannot be the first!

I've used a Sunpak 383 in the hot shoe without any problems.
Fires  
the flash in manual and Av mode easily. Be sure the shutter
speed is  
1/180 sec or slower.

I would suspect a bad hot shoe adapter, I've had a lot of
them that  
had problems. I would also recommend using a Wein Safe Sync
to be on  
the safe side ...
