While there's no way to set the D between stops, it does include half
stops on aps with many lenses. I know that with most, if not all, of my
FA and DA lenses, I get stops at f 6.7, f9.5, f13 and the other half
clicks. And of course you can always use exposure compensation for fine
tuning. I believe it adjusts the ap when you're in aperture priority
shooting mode. I'm not sure if the DS is the same in this regard. Of
course with K and M lenses, the ap is set manually, so any position one
wishes can be selected.

Can't be done on the D. I don't know about the DS.

Just curious ... can the aperture be set between stops, like between
2.8
and 3.5, or can the camera do that automagically?

In Manual exposure mode on the, the thumbwheel wheel controls both
aperture and shutter speed. Turned by itself, set shutter speeds from
30 seconds to 1/4000 second. Press the "+/- Av" button and the
thumbwheel sets the aperture.
And...
In Av mode, the thumbwheel controls the aperture. Press the "+/- Av"
button and the thumbwheel controls the EV compensation. In Tv mode,
the thumbwheel controls the shutter speed, and EV compensation is
controlled same as in Av mode.
