It never happened to me. Yes, when the indicator shows half-full you must think of the batteries as being 90% empty, and sometimes you even get a wrong half-full icon (just turn the camera off and on and you get full indicator back). However, when I see the half-full symbol, there are no glitches and no immediate need to stop shooting, so I go ahead to fully discharge the batteries.
I use NiMH all the time. Which kind of battery caused you so?
