Hello friends,
I've been quite busy for some time so I was not very visible on the list
(still about 20k messages to go). In the meantime I spent quite some
time planning my trip to the southwestern parts of the USA. As this will
be my first trip to the USA I welcome any suggestions regarding:
1. destinations: Yosemite (El Capitan), Bryce, Zion (Angels Landing) and
San Francisco are must see for me. I'd like to see also Grand Canyon and
historical Route 66 if time allows. Las Vegas is also on the route, but
generally I don't like big cities. Ann San also suggested Arches and
Monument Valley IIRC. All this should be done within 3 weeks. Do you
think it's feasible? Any other must see places, scenic roads, view/photo
points?
2. accomodation: in the national parks I will prefer to stay close to
the nature so camping is a natural choice for me. Do you have any
preferences regarding the campgrounds in the above-mentioned national
parks? Also are there any rest places around the roads?
3. food: I saw a documentary about bears breaking windows on parked cars
searching for food. So I need a suggestion how to prevent bears damage
our (rented) car and don't stay hungry at the same time. Is it possible
to buy or at least safely store food inside a national park? If not, where?
Some facts: I will arrive on 15th September together with my colleague
who is also (lurking) on the List. I will bring my MX and some of my
beloved Pentax glass (M28/3.5, M50/1.4, M75-150/4) with me. Last days of
our trip (Oct 3rd-5th) we plan to stay in San Francisco - what about a
nice little PDML meeting there? ;-)
Bedo.
