When using a manual focus lens, only the center focus sensor is
active regardless of any other settings. I'm not sure about when
using an AF lens with the AF-MF switch set to MF. However, I find
that the focus indication with manual focus lenses is insufficiently
accurate for wide open shooting or a lot of long-lens shooting. I
rely upon the sharpness of the image on the focusing screen only and
ignore the green warning light.
You can turn off the superimposed AF focus point indicator with a
custom setting. It's useless with a manual focus lens as the only
active sensor is going to be the center one anyway, and I find it
lighting up in the middle of where I'm trying to focus a distraction.
As for exposure, I typically have my camera set for 1/3 stop
under-exposure.
Do you use spot, center weighted, or the matrix metering?
With M and K-bayonet series lenses, the DS only supports CW Averaging
and Spot meter pattern. With A series and all AF lens series, you get
matrix metering. If you're set to matrix metering and fit a pre-A
series manual focus lens, it will automatically default to CW Averaging.
I've not seen large differences in auto-exposure settings switching
between matrix metering and cw averaging unless the custom option
"link AF-AE" was set on. It's off by default, and only works with an
AF series lens when the body is set to matrix metering and
multipattern AF sensor operation.
