We did leaf peeping for the 1st time last year, check the web sites for colors.
I would be flexible and prepared to go where the color is at it's
peak.  I found the northern half of New Hampshire was the White
Mountains, mainly evergreen trees (pines, spruce, ...) so little color
even at peak.

If possible, Bar Harbor, Maine for Acadia National Park is worth a
couple of days.  I will go back as soon as I can for the spectacular
rocky coastal vistas.  On the way up or back to Boston, you can visit
L.L.Bean in Freeport, Maine.  They are a big outdoor equipment and
clothing retailer (Open 24 hours per day).

I didn't find much call for telephoto lenses.  The focus is on the
normal to wide end of your kit.
