Well, you don't ~have to~ press an extra button.  If you know how to read
the light and not rely upon the camera's internal meter, or meter the
scenes beforehand, just setting aperture and shutter speed is all that's
needed.  I'm just starting to explore that technique with the DS - my
objective is to use the camera in the simplest, fastest way possible. 
Using (and relying upon) built in meters has always slowed me down.
