Hey Frank ... Get yourself an inexpensive but decent P&S that you can easily carry about in a pocket. You'd be surprised at how handy they can be for snaps and test shots, or for making pics to be used for reminders of later subjects to be photographed in greater depth, or just fun shots where a splash of color can be nice.
I'd never suggest that you replace film with digi, but the two can make a nice compliment to one another. I got a lot of nice pics from my little Sony, and it's still going strong. My friend Meg's been using it for a gathering of family and friends up in Montana this past week. One of the nice features of the Sony, and other similar cameras, is that you can add a voice notation to the pics, so say you're on your bike, cruising past something you'd like to photograph "seriously" later on, you can make a quick snap of the scene and add a comment, such as the location of the subject, to the pic.
