Thanks everyone for their suggestions (clarifications on the poor things
symptoms below). One last check - is anyone still running the 1.0 firmware,
I wonder if no c/f behaviour is different with firmware versions. If I
actually had a c/f card left I might try upgrading to the current firmware
to see if it's a software prob that might be fixed - I don't really want to
spring for a c/f card though if I might have to end up getting a DS or
something.
Is there an equivalent of the PC 'three fingered salute' to do a complete
camera reset without undergoing a firmware change that anyone knows about?
Have tried the 'reset' under menu but this only resets the custom functions
etc. rather than rebooting camera.

Would someone kindly test functionality on a D when used without a memory

Most functions should work normally, allthough the display on the
top of the camera will show nr of images available as "0", flashing.
Most do , just stuck in quality=*** and no control of shutter/aperture via
wheels or any of the main mode knob functions.
On mine, the shutter and aperture wheels DO work in all modes
except "green" (which is normal :-)
Autofocus does NOT seem to work though, I need to have a card
inserted for that to work. The shutter does not release either.
Bizarre. Autofocus and shutter release work fine.
When switching the camera on, and with many attempted operations,
the LCD screen on the back will say "No card in camera"
Yep. It's not wrong there :-)
Plainly the camera is essentially useless at present but I wonder if it
could be operating strangely because there is no card inside - currently I
don't have one to test it with.
Try setting it at "P" and restest the wheels.
Also, whith mode set to 'ISO', you see the current ISO
displayed on the top display ...
Setting mode to P or ISO has no effect on display or function. Normal
display, meters, focuses, flashes and fires shutter even when set to
ISO/quality/WB.
